From mdavis2 at ucsc.edu Tue Jan 5 16:45:57 2021 From: mdavis2 at ucsc.edu (Marilyn Davis) Date: Tue, 5 Jan 2021 13:45:57 -0800 Subject: [Baypiggies] Remote Winter Classes at UCSC-Extension in the Silicon Valley Message-ID: Python For Programmers Online Now You can start the online version of "Python For Programmers" course now, although the official start isn't until February 9. You have access to videos and other online materials, and the instructor until April 6. https://course.ucsc-extension.edu/modules/shop/index.html?action=section&OfferingID=5591127&SectionID=7129639 For this course, it is best to have some programming experience in any language. However, online we have a lot of time to work through the material. I have a reputation for answering all questions quickly and patiently because I like to help. --- Python For Data Analysis - Via Live Zoom Jan 15, 2021 - Mar 19, 2021 10 Fridays 6:30 - 9:30 PM PST. With the miracle tools: Python, Pandas, and Jupyter notebooks, we go from zero to analyzing data in this short class. It is helpful, but not required to know a programming language, and a little about statistics. https://course.ucsc-extension.edu/modules/shop/index.html?action=section&OfferingID=6240437&SectionID=7134901 --- All courses are hands-on with short lectures, and lots of relevant exercises, and, we study the solutions after some lab time. Questions are always welcome. Please come, and send students! There will also be a lightning talk from Chris Brousseau. Lightning Talk: To Be Announced Speaker: Chris Brousseau BayPiggies regular Chris Brousseau will be giving a lightning talk with a data science theme. Main Talk: Serverless Computing with Python & Google Cloud Description "Serverless" is a term that means many different things. It is a relatively new field of cloud computing allowing developers to focus more on the solutions they're building and worry less about the infrastructure. Are there really no servers? What is the outlook of serverless technologies in industry today? In this session, we will introduce developers to cloud & the serverless computing industry then focus specifically on serverless compute services. There are various ways Python developers can leverage serverless, whether it's entire (web) apps, mobile backends, functions/FaaS, or containerized applications. Attendees will learn how to run code on Google Cloud serverless platforms... code samples will be in Python (and some JavaScript), but other languages are supported. Whether you're a developer, technical consultant, software engineer, DevOps/IT staff, or a systems analyst, you'll learn how to run code on Google's cloud and be part of a cloud-ready workforce. Long-time Python App Engine developers will get an update on what's going on in App Engine-land and get modernization tips. Speaker bio: Wesley Chun WESLEY CHUN (@wescpy) is the author of Prentice Hall's bestselling "Core Python" (corepython.com) series, co-author of "Python Web Development with Django" (withdjango.com), and has written for Linux Journal, CNET, and InformIT. Wesley has over 25 years of programming, teaching, and writing experience, and was one of the original Yahoo!Mail engineers. He holds degrees in CS, Math, and Music from the University of California, is a Fellow of the Python Software Foundation, and Adjunct Computer Science faculty at Foothill College in Silicon Valley. Talks can range in length from 5 minutes to 45 minutes. If you are new to public speaking, a short talk is a great opportunity to get some experience! Due to the COVID-19 situation, our meetings are currently online-only. We assume this will be the case for at least the next 6 months, but will reevaluate the situation each month. We are looking for technical talks with a Python focus, either about the language and core libraries itself, popular libraries/platforms using Python (for example Pandas, Flask, BeautifulSoup, etc.), your own personal side projects, or other experiences using Python. See the list of past meetings at https://baypiggies.net/category/meetings.html to get a sense of topics. As our participants are using their personal time for these meetings, we request that talks are inclusive and not overly commercial, political, etc. If you are interested, either fill out a short survey at https://forms.gle/y7y9zFDWDEDuVT78A, or contact is directly at jeffrey.fischer at gmail.com. We hope to hear from you! Regards, The BayPiggies organizer team -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
