[Borgbackup] best way to back up running KVM images

I have a machine running 3 KVM guests.  I can't stop or suspend them for
a backup (one is a domain controller). I am on zfs so  I may be able to
do a suspend operation / snapshot trick.  I've also seen a clone, backup
the original , then merge back in the clone/ trick as well but I must be
missing something because I never got that to work. 

So, any suggestions?
