This is a matter of balance between ZFS and the machines you backup
(calculus power).
I'd say that with today's hardware, you can go your way either path but
not both together, because, as David Gasaway said, it would be counter
productive and would take more disk place.
That said, whether you choose to lz4 compress on clients or on the
server doesn't matter very much, as lz4 is very fast, except if you
backup a lot of clients at the same time, in which case the time/power
taken by the server's compression might hamper your bandwidth.
Of course, if you choose a much harder compression (ie: bzip2), clients
will have to do the job to avoid pushing up the load of the server
excessively.
