When easy_install was written, the only links it could find were
those to "unhidden" versions, and older versions were hidden by default.
IIRC, the URLs of "hidden" versions were added to the "simple" API
after user complaints about not being able to access non-current
versions... thus creating the current problem.
Basically, one is stuck with either timeouts or un-findable old
versions in the case where a maintainer is not keeping their links tidy.
