Tarek,

	Where is the server code? I had a version working about a month ago but put it on hold 'till after PyCon.

	I might be able to give whatever you have a boost with some already tested and working code.

Every time I go to upload documentation (not that often), I spend five
to fifteen minutes trying to find the page which contains this form.
Can we make it more prominent somehow? Or at least have the directions
for finding it be on the list so that I can search for it next time?

Thanks!

I can make it more prominent, if You tell me how to.

Can you tell me where to find it? If so, I might be able to suggest a
UI change.

That's why I can't find it! That link is a different page than the
"edit" link visible at the top of each package page (the "Package: admin
| view | edit | files | PKG-INFO" links). The "edit" link in that menu
is for editing the PKG-INFO for the displayed release, rather than for
managing the project as a whole. Could we add a link into that list
which corresponds to the 'pkg_edit' action?

What should be the exact position and label of that link?

"We" can add anything that "we" want.

I propose putting the link immediately to the right of the "admin" link,
with the label "releases" (since it is primarily for managing the
visibility of releases).

That's up to you, really, as the hand at the helm for the design of the
site. The user is expressing a need; that need has to be addressed in
the context of what all the other users need, including the need for a
consistent UI.

It's not appropriate for each user to design individual pieces of the
UI, otherwise the result will inevitably be an inconsistent mess.

You must have had a bad night last night. Python, its docs, and site are
nothing but *filtered* collaborative efforts. It is appropriate for
users to do the harder work of suggesting solutions to problems in
addition to the easier work of presenting problems. We need more of
that, not less. Busy component managers can then accept, reject, or
modify (including for consistency).

Unless, of course, you are offering to do it all :-)

I just use sphinx-upload and never have to remember anything:

hi,

categories for different python implementations would be useful on pypi.

If only to know which modules are tested by various package authors on
different implementations.

Maybe something like this:

Programming Language :: PyPy
Programming Language :: PyPy :: 1.2
Programming Language :: Jython
Programming Language :: Iron Python
Programming Language :: Shed Skin
Programming Language :: PyMite
Programming Language :: tinypy
Programming Language :: tinypyC++
Programming Language :: Pyjamas

If you like I can gather all of the version numbers for them too?

cheers,

Per proposed category: which existing packages would be classified in
this category?

Hi Martin,

I'm not sure exactly :) Django has jython/pypy/ironpython support for
example. Twisted, pyglet, pywebsite, cherrypy and others support pypy.

Should I make a bigger list?

That, or propose fewer categories. I don't really want to introduce
categories that serve no actual purpose.

The question then really is: how to get package authors to actually use
these categories?

Martin

The real problem with categories like this is that if they only
indicate that the package has been tested (and the tests pass) with
that implementation of Python, there's no way to tell if the tests
failed with another implementation, or if they simply weren't run.

I'd use them if we could also indicate that the package doesn't work
with certain implementations. This would also apply to some other
groups other classifiers, such as those for the operating system.
Perhaps there should be something like a "not :: <classifier>" as
well, to indicate known non-support for operating system or Python
implementation (or possibly other things, but not sure what else at
this time).

I don't see this as a problem. What I want to know, as a user, is
whether the package is supported on some platform. If the author has
declared support, I can expect that it is supported. If the author has
not declared support, it means that the package is not supported -
whether or not the package actually works, or could be made to work.

If the package is not supported on, say, Jython, I can still test
whether it works, and port it if it doesn't.

Martin

Dear all,

I first adressed this question to the distutils-sig mailing list and
was kindly told to post this question to this mailinglist so here it
goes.

The XMLRPC API documentation for PyPi at http://wiki.python.org/moin/PyPiXmlRpc
  contains a 'downloads' key in the example. However in the
documentation below it is missing and my own tries at the API confirm
this.

Now I would very much like to have access to the data (especially the
download count). Is there any possibility of these values returning?

Regards,

Simon de Vlieger

As far as I can see, the download count is not exposed (anymore ?) in
the release_data XMLRPC method, but it shouldn't be hard to add it
back since it's directly accessible in the storage
 (built through a cron that reads the apache stats)

It just requires one extra call to `store.list_files(package_name, version)`

Let's see what Martin says.. :)

Tarek,

I see that Martin has responded in the distutils-sig post I adressed
there.

He suggested I should create a feature request at the sourceforge
project page for pypi. I will pursue that route.
