I just installed Python 2.7.2 using the python-2.7.2.amd64.msi installer from www.python.org onto a machine with a brand new install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, but it looks like the python that was installed is 32-bit. Idle's logon message is:

Python 2.7.2 (default, Jun 12 2011 14:24:46) [MSC v.1500 64bit (AMD 64)] on win32

and sys.maxint reports 2147483647

Shouldn't that have installed a 64-bit version of Python?
