The classic solution is double injection[1], 
where the legend is solid plastic. 
I'll be impressed if you can wear through those. 

You should _see_ how this is solved on XY's keyboard.

With a keyboard in one's lap, one's wrists are bent less. 
and desktop space is not wasted.
