short answer:
yes java is still relevant. go for it, but it's important to learn more
concepts around it, not just java.
long answer:
if the aim is to become a good programmer, i would advise a different
approach. there are certain core concepts that transcend programming
languages. most of the top companies just look for solid understanding of
these core concepts especially when hiring a fresher, irrespective of
programming language expertise. programming language knowledge is also
tested, but it doesn't matter which language. if the java course that you
friend has in mind is just about java and its frameworks and object
oriented programming, it's only a small part of what is essential to a
programmer. also one other thing to keep in mind, is not to get confined
into a certain way of thinking because of early exposure to specialized
