[Chicago] Researchers work on smart city search engine

While the application prospect is pretty wild, I was just wondering
how will these solutions provide a uniform api for such heterogeneous
collection of sensors? Is there a standard that all devices would talk
in or some middleware intervenes does the job? This is the internet of
things dream, right?
