D.C. 6th International Improvisation Festival sponsored by GWU Nov. 30 -
Dec. 10
Improvisation Festival features artists from around the world meeting
artists from around D.C.
This year, the festival sponsored by George Washington University and
curated by Cyrus Khambatta and Maida Withers is presenting over 50 artists
in four venues thoroughout the Washington D.C. area. Bringing together
artists from Spain, France, and England with D.C-based and regional
artists, the festival will present eight evenings of cutting-edge
improvisation in dance, live music and performance. Workshops will also be
offered and will take place on both weekends of the festival.
Every evening will have a different line-up of artists and groups with
performances from each ranging from 20-45 minutes each. Each evening will be
from 50 minutes to an hour and a half in length, and on December 1st, 2nd
and 10th open jams will follow the performances. An additional jam will be
held following Cyrus Khambatta's class (12:30-3:30) on Sunday December 10
from 3:30-6:30pm. The venues are located around D.C. with the intention of
bringing not only artists together , but uniting audiences from different

Workshop Descriptions:
Biography:
Francesca Genco will lead you into a more intimate relationship with your
body and spirit. Re-member and explore your deepest and purest self through
fluid, connected breathing. Express what you find through authentic
movement and voice. We will often work with eyes closed as a way to
facilitate dropping deeper inward, using breath as a vehicle to access
moving and sounding from a core inner impulse. Drawing and journaling will
then serve as ways to further express our findings. No movement/dance
experience is necessary.
Daniel Burkholder will teach a workshop combining indivual awareness with
group mind, exploring dancing in a crowd. Finding our place in the group
through structures based in space, contact/non-contact & moving/stillness.
Caroline Waters will teach a class looking at the use of sensation as a
resource for moving. Concentrating on practices drawn from contact
improvisation and Chi-gong we will be looking at the use of touch in partner
dancing whilst improvising. Having the possibility to examine different
states and developing skills of real time composition whilst the body/mind
is in motion.
Sharon Mansur's workshop utilizes the movement framework developed by
Rudolph Laban to identify and clarify personal movement preferences and
improvisational choices. Learn how to observe, self-assess and broaden your
range, encouraging a deeper and richer performance experience.
Cyrus Khambatta's workshop will focus on creating and changing environments
beginning from a deeply personal and internal state using vocalization and
working outwards, bringing this into connection first with others, then with
the space. Once an environment is created we will allow it to inspire us to
move into the space and explore its boundaries, seeking ways to transition
to new environmental states while maintaining the inside-outside connection.
Renata Arnedo's workshop will accent our capacity to be in and with the
present seeking to find a deeper sense of easiness, sensitivity and freedom
of movement and body. At the same time, we will examine our individual
intuition and imagaination as well as musicality, sense of rhythm and
phrasing needed for improvisation.
