April 27 - Music & Contact: Listening to Each Other
Nancy Stark Smith and Mike Vargas

Throughout the day we will move with many species of live music, in
"silence," and will make our own music, including "CI"-style music duets.
Nancy and Mike's intention is to promote detailed listening and to cultivate
more conscious and varied relationships between how we move and what we hear.
Tuition/Room/Board: $65; ($85 includes Sat. jam/sleepover)

*Nancy Stark Smith first trained as an athlete and gymnast, leading her to
study and perform modern and postmodern dance in the early 1970's. She danced
in the first performances of Contact Improvisation in 1972 and has since been
centrally involved in its development as dancer, teacher, performer, writer/
publisher and organizer, working with Steve Paxton and other favorite dance
partners and performance makers. She has traveled throughout the world
teaching and performing Contact and related dance work. In 1975 she cofounded
Contact Quarterly, an international dance and improvisation journal, which
she continues to coedit and produce.

Mike Vargas began making music for dancers in 1978 and has since been
accompanying and composing music (close to 100 commissioned scores) for
dancers across the U.S. and abroad. He has taught music, composition, and
improvisation at various colleges and has worked in a wide variety of
contexts.
