** Q & A with Dayna Hanson...
------------------------------------------------------------
1) How you plan to work with students?
I'll be setting brand-new choreography on students. The week will have an immediate, exploratory feel as this material is very new to me. I'm still investigating where each movement originates in the body and how attack, repetition and causal connection will inform vocabulary, phrasing and choreography. I'm interested in how dancers inhabit the stage, so will devote time to exercises in personal presence and focus. The material is abstract and geometrical; full of momentum, falling and quick directional changes. Once the group has naturalized the movement into their bodies they will help me try out some structures. There may be windows for improvisational experiments, too.
2) What do you plan to do with the work once created (aside from perform at SIDF)?
This is the first manifestation of my newest evening-length dance piece, "Keep On Smiling That Beautiful Smile" (working title). I'll partner with a cinematographer friend to make a high quality video document of the work during SIDF. I'll cast the piece later this summer and rehearse for 18 months. I'm in early discussions with several presenters around the country about possibilities for touring the work in the 2015-16 season and beyond.
3) What might be of particular interest to students about the process?
As a self-trained choreographer who has been making and touring dance for more than 25 years, my choreography is unusual. It's challenging and eccentric and requires a great deal of detail work, speed and precision. Most dancers seem to find my choreography rewarding and fun to perform.
4) Anything else of interest
I often make dance theater work that incorporates text, props and video. In the last few years I've delved into some pressing social themes in my work. However, this piece represents a pendulum swing for me and is probably the most abstract dance piece of my career so far.
