But only with Python 2.2.1 and 2.2.2. I have not tried 2.2.3.

I don't use bjam very much, but

cd boost_1_30_0/libs/python/test
bjam ...

definitely works here. FWIW, here is the command that I use (without messing
around with environment variables):

bjam -sPYTHON_ROOT=/usr/local_cci/Python-2.2.1 -sTOOLS=gcc -sPYTHON_VERSION=2.2
