Turned out that a very small mistake in my policy files had set the 
bases<> for the class_<> of FXTopWindow (inherited by FXMainWindow) 
to be FXWindow when in fact it was FXShell, thus skipping the 
relevent FXComposite. One of those tiny, tiny errors you never think 
of checking and it's eaten three full days of development now :(

Anyway, if anyone ever has the problem I did, go check your 
inheritence tree as told to BPL matches reality!!!

(Also, sorry for wasting bandwidth!)
