[DB-SIG] db module wrapper

Is a standard even possible?  Consult www.connectionstrings.com to see how
many variations exist even when the client computer is restricted to a
MsWindows system. Nevertheless, if someone else has already visited this
Pandora's box, let's look at what they came up with.
  Where do we find info on the "jdbc standard"?

One thing I'm surprised nobody mentioned is a uniform login method. 
Does anyone have a suggestion for this?  I thought about using the jdbc
