[Distutils] RE:Installation

OLD PROBLEM

I am new to programming and python and I am afraid that I am having the same
problem as Fred had...I want to install numpy and must therefore install
distutils first. How can I fix the lack of the config directory and
therefore its contents Makefile? I have tried reinstalling python but have
had no success. I am running python on Linux red hat 6.1. Any help?
