I spoke (one day) too soon.  When I was originally writing the above,
I started with phrases like "The next Cygwin gcc release" and "The as
yet unannounced Cygwin gcc release," but I decided to take a chance.
Unfortunately, the Red Hat folks just yanked the Cygwin gcc 2.95.2-7
release yesterday due to other problems.

The current Cygwin gcc release (i.e., 2.95.2-6) still binds against
crtdll.dll.  Sorry, if my post caused any heartaches.
