OK, the problem is that I don't have berkeley db installed on my server.
Therefor setup.py chokes with 

  Can't find a local db3 installation.

This keeps distutils.core.run_setup from being able to extract the
meta-data from the archive.

This is yet another reason that we need distutils to write meta-data to
a file when building an archive. Extracting meta-data by running
setup.py may fail for many reasons.
