OTOH, machines got at least 3-5 times faster since the days of 
Python 1.5.2 :-)

Still, you're right. Python 1.5.2 compatibility should be preserved
for at least another year.

Thomas, I'd suggest you check in the fixes for string method
usage -- perhaps distutils could grow some helpers in util.py
to aid with this, e.g. filename(str) and platformname() ?!
