Why would that break anything? As it's not a checkout, it will not use
these files to generate the file list, but instead include all files.
That is not a breakage.

My proposal was 100% utterly free from any sort of magic. Please,
guys, stop claiming that there is magic unless you can explain exactly
what is magical. I repeat my request for this discussion to explain in
concrete terms what the problems are, instead of vague hand waving and
talk about "magic".
