I don't know anything about z3c.sourcerelease, so any pointers you can 
give would be helpful!
(my only guess: you don't have buildout-versions in development mode? 
The only thing similar to what you described was when I had 
buildout-versions in develop mode in my ~/.buildout/default.cfg...
