[Distutils] setuptools error when using --prefix option, complains directory does not exist

Hi
I am installing setuptools using the --prefix option it complains the
directory does not exist even though it does. The install works however when
I use the --instal-dir option as it recommends.
Thought I would pass this along

--prefix=/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages

'/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/lib/python2.6/site-packages/test-easy-install-79530.pth'
The installation directory you specified (via --install-dir, --prefix, or
the distutils default setting) was:
/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/lib/python2.6/site-packages
This directory does not currently exist. Please create it and try again, or
choose a different installation directory (using the -d or --install-dir
option).
