Quite possibly I misunderstood the thrust of your argument, but the point of
distlib is to take care of those kinds of low-level details, rather than
having multiple packaging tools reimplement that processing you refer to. Of
course people are free to not use distlib, but if I'm wasting my time then
it would be nice if people would tell me :-)
