OK. But I regard vthat as a case of "if false then anything". I do think
that we should explicitly abandon any solution that requires a change to
distutils. That's never going to happen. (If one of the core commiters
wants to prove me wrong, then go for it - but I think it's a waste of time
for anyone else to bother speculating about it).
