[Distutils] night build just started failing with TypeError: must be type, not classobj on Python 2.7

Hi All,

Nightly builds of one of my packages 
(https://travis-ci.org/Mortar/mortar_rdb) just began failing with:

TypeError: must be type, not classobj

...but only on Python 2. The full traceback is here:

I haven't pushed any changed to that project in a few weeks/days.

Does anyone know what might have changed to cause this problem? I 
couldn't see any recent releases of setuptools or pip, so wondering what 
I'm missing...
