just to be sure I understand your request, after the for loop:

>>> for x in a[:]:
...    if len(x) > 6: a.insert(0, x)

did you also entered 'a' and pressed ENTER:

>>> a
['defenestrate', 'cat', 'window', 'defenestrate']
