I don't think the problem is with the information loss, but
the fact that this leak of information might easily occur
when not intended or expected.

A rational numbers type might be appealing though, as part
of the primitive language.  Currently, lots of optional
modules give you rationals (heck, I've written one myself),
and/or even decimals of quasi-unlimited precision.
