I just spotted this on Simon Brunning's blog [
http://www.brunningonline.net/simon/blog/archives/001041.html ]:

http://www.schooltool.org/

"""
SchoolTool is a project to develop a common global school administration
infrastructure that is freely available under an Open Source licence.
Our vision is to create a platform that is equally compelling for
schools and colleges in First and Third World countries, that supports
best practices in school administration and which is readily customised
to comply with local regulatory requirements.
"""

It's got backing from the Shuttleworth Foundation, which is owned by the
guy who went in to Space as a Space Tourist last year. It looks like it
could be a really interesting project. It's not directly related to
teaching (it's for administration) but it seems relevant to this list.
