Best I can relate to is my interest in athletics.  But I retarded my son's progress in tennis by suggesting, once, where on the court it might be advantageous for him to position himself. He tried to develop a strategy that could be effective while positioning himself anywhere, but there.

He was perfectly willing to take instruction. Just not from me. 

But I did play a more important role in his progress. As the someone he had to get good enough to beat. Which he was doing consistently by age 16.

But back standing where I told him he should be.

So be ready to get challenged.
