Huh, on Ubuntu the webbrowser module works fine for me out of the box. 
Do you maybe have something in /opt/firefox that could distract the 
module?  It shouldn't run the -bin directly either.  It looks like it 
just runs "mozilla-firefox -noraise|-raise remote 
'openURL(<url>[,new-window])'", and leaves it up to PATH to find the 
actual binary.
