Some people have gotten tired of the old Europython logo and think
that it is time for a change.

Here is a candidate for a new Europython logo,
suggested by Jeroen Vloothuis and Thijs Jonkman
http://europython.pyconuk.org/community/Planning/ProposedLogo

We're interested in finding out what people think.

And, if you have an idea for a logo, please send it to
europython-improve at python.org . Or better yet, join that newsgroup,
where we have begun organising Europython 2008.

There's always room for more organisers.

thanks very much,
Laura Creighton

Just an idea, but how about a play on the new Python logo with
the EU circle of stars around it ?

http://www.python.org/community/logos/

This would need the approval of the PSF, but that's not going to
be hard to get (http://www.python.org/psf/trademarks/).

I like the idea of collage -- certainly the current Python logo
(twin snakes, Mayan flavor -- or is that Incan?) would look
right at home in some Euro context (it comes from the
Netherlands after all, just like New Amsterdam -- only later
New York).

I somewhat like the idea of a logo branding *a conference*
more than the idea of Europython in the abstract. Something
more Vilnius in tone, a python entwined in a glass ship or
something. As the conference moves about, the logo could
be refreshed each time, always with some local color, just
an idea.

Given the new Python logo already anchors the official
website, I feel like permanent branding of the Pycon series
is likewise unnecessary, in terms of insignia or decals
(calling Pycon is likely a keeper).

Gediminas Tower is probably a good local symbol of Vilnius
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gediminas_Tower).

However choosing to have a localised logo will add more work to
volunteer logo designers. How do they feel about it?

More importantly, how will they feel next year, when we need a new logo?

Remember that the 12 stars (representing since the age of times the 12
constellations of the zodiac for those who wonder where that comes from
...) are an emblem of the European Union, not necessarily a symbol of
Europe. Then the serpent is highly symbolic too, meaning cold wisdom or
pure intellect, as in "wise as a serpent".

I thought I'd mention that since Europython took place two years ago in
a country which isn't part of the EU, i.e Switzerland.

True, although the glass ship suggestion wasn't just
out of the blue either. It already has a snake head of
sorts:

Seems like there's no shortage of talent in Europe,
plus this is a way to showcase local artists, get some
free press.

The annual EuroPython logo contest... good be
prestigious, given how important Python has become.

Think of this as a way to involve people *willing*
to learn some Python (the computer language) but
already having very well developed *other* skill sets.

Attracting such people, in some cases family, is
a key challenge for Pycons as well. Looking for
threads that open the field to non/wannabe coders,
is how we stay from becoming too ingrown (which,
in the Jared Diamond sense of "why civilizations
fail" would *not* be a good thing).

I think that's a *very* good point.

The "Euro" in EuroPython means "in Europe" which *need not* be
considered synonymous with "EU" -- the political institution(s).

I know PyPy gets EU funding and such -- not like Euro is
"anti-EU" or anything. But EuroPython is not a creature of the
EU (right?). Just like Pycon is no USA lackey (people come
from around the world -- there's no implication this is something
"government hosted").

Reminds me of a favorite bumper sticker in these parts:

"USA *out* of North America!"

Right up there with "Keep Portland Weird" in some neighborhoods.

Sure, but getting Europa and the Bull in there with the Python snake
is kinda tricky.

Besides, Switzerland will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. :)

I think its time to make a webpage with links to the various proposed
designs. Anybody up for doing that?

While it's true that the EU uses the "Flag of Europe" as symbol,
the meaning is broader that you might think:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Europe

The flag is indeed the flag of Europe as it was created by
the Council of Europe:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Council_of_Europe

Switzerland and Lithuania are members of the Council.

"""
The Council of Europe described the flag as: "Against the blue sky of the Western world, the stars represent the peoples
of Europe in a circle, a symbol of unity. Their number shall be invariably set at twelve, the symbol of completeness and
perfection ... just like the twelve signs of the zodiac represent the whole universe, the twelve gold stars stand for
all peoples of Europe -- including those who cannot as yet take part in building up Europe in unity and peace."

Sure, the point that I was making is that Europython is not a
construction of the European Union or of a European Council, so the
logotype doesn't have to use the same esoteric symbology as the one
found in the emblems of the EU, at least not as blatantly.

I'm afraid I don't have a logo to put forward, but I would like to
suggest (without any hint of irony) the approach used by the Eurovision
organizers - their logo was designed so that each year it could be
easily customised to include the flag of the host country - see here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_Song_Contest. The World-Wide
Web conference have a similar approach, adapting "WWW" to include
cultural references to the host country.

Just a note to say that I think this is a fantastic logo, and can, in my
opinion, be (marginally) improved. The best logos have little or no text in
them (or text that can be removed) and a very simple striking design.
(Think of logos that haven't changed in (say) decades rather than
something new)

If you lose the text (ie "uro" & "ython") as well as EU stars around the logo
above, you're left with something very striking & very simple, and IMO
potentially very stylish :-)

It's also got potential for bio-informatics people who work with python by
mirroring horizontally and aping the traditional "medical" logo of entwined
snakes. (You could even have that as a play on ideas - you do that and say
something like "Go to Europython - Because it's good for you" :-)

Subject: [EuroPython] EuroPython 2008: A Call for Theme and Talk Suggestions
Message-ID: <200802150030.50919.paul@boddie.org.uk>

As preparations for EuroPython 2008 gather momentum, we [*] would like to find
out what kinds of talks and themes would be most interesting to the
EuroPython community: that is, the people planning to attend the conference,
along with those people following the conference from further afield. In
other words: what do you think are the most exciting areas of Python activity
right now, and what aspects of them would you most like to hear about at
EuroPython 2008?

Last year, the conference focused on agile development, but also promoted many
of the familiar categories: business, education, games, language and
libraries, science, social skills and Web development. Of course, topics such
as Web development remain as popular as ever, but we also saw strong
contributions in other areas such as robotics and database systems.

So, we would like your opinions on the hot topics you would like to see
covered at EuroPython - perhaps a topic you might even consider delivering a
talk about yourself. We have set up a page on the EuroPython site to collect
ideas, and the community is very welcome to add their thoughts and
suggestions to it. Discussion on this mailing list is, of course, also
encouraged!

See here for the page of talk and theme suggestions:

http://www.europython.org/community/Talk_Suggestions

And see here for some help on contributing to the site:

http://www.europython.org/community/Participants

Of course, EuroPython welcomes talks about anything Python-related - they
don't have to fit the eventual themes of the conference exactly. Unlike some
conferences, EuroPython isn't about fitting talks into some rigid structure
and filtering out things which don't belong.

Instead, we welcome new ideas, even on the very nature of the conference
programme itself. For example, would tutorials - a regular feature of other
Python conferences - be interesting to EuroPython attendees? Would you like
to see influential developers discuss issues in panel sessions? Are there any
other activities which could be brought into the EuroPython schedule from
other conferences?

Let the discussion begin!

[*] As EuroPython is a community conference, there isn't really an "us"
(meaning the organisers) and a "them" (meaning everyone else). Everyone is
welcome to help shape the conference into something meaningful to them. See
the EuroPython site at europython.org for more information!

The candidates proposed so far for a new EuroPython logo have been uploaded to
the EuroPython site for convenient comparison:

http://www.europython.org/community/Planning/ProposedLogo

In the third IRC meeting, the consensus appeared to be that we would let
people propose other designs, and give the designers of the existing
candidates a chance to refine their designs, setting a deadline two weeks in
the future.

So, logo designers have until Thursday 28th February to propose new logos and
to refine their existing work. Feel free to either add the designs to the
above page or, if you don't feel confident doing that, to post them to the
europython-improve mailing list:

Hello,

just to let you know: there is CNAME for eu.pycon.org that
points to www.europython.org - in the spirit of the pycon.org
domain which is to provide second level domains to Python
conferences around the world.

This CNAME has been enabled for years. It actually triggered
the registration of pycon.org due to problems we had with the
europython.org domain when organizing EPC 2003.

You might want to add a redirect to the www.europython.org
or allow eu.pycon.org to be used as well.

OK, as I like simplicity I added something siple to the page. I took
the Eurovision idea with the flag too, it was a neat idea.

No, the 2008 isn't centered. It's indented. :)

Big sigh that we only get the "eyeglasses" effect (Lithuanian flag
lenses) for one more year (2009). Glasses gone in 2010.

I like that it's customized as to time and to place (*that* seems like
a right idea to me -- but then none of the others say they're
unswappable).

The twelve stars idea seems clever too: decide in advance Europe
is about uniting twelve peoples, never mind which twelve or just who,
just twelve is a nice number so let's just move on.

Plus I really *loved* this "not centered, indented" remark!

Yep, that's a good Pythonic sense of humor I thought.

Then I realized "the glasses" were going away -- but is
that really a problem?

You can make loads of nerdy jokes like this.

euro_python[2008] = 'vilnius'

europython:
    2008 in 'Vilnius'

:)

In fact, that last one makes the indentation clearer. I'll make a
variation like that too.

No, they are only there as a side-effect of putting the Lithuanian
colours in there.

Other notes: It's the same typeface and the same grey hue (or supposed
to be) as the python logo, but without the snake, as the snake with
colours would clash with the flag-colors, and making a grey snake
would violate the terms for the usage of the Python-logo.
