Depends on your definition of "walking distance". I remember last year we
went to restaurants in the city center, that's basically 30 minutes on
foot, which is just inside my definition of walking distance, but your
mileage may vary. Another very interesting area is the Oltrarno: there is
plenty of small (and not so small) restaurants, which I find cheaper, on
average, than those in the city center -- but the food is extremely good,
nonetheless --.

Consider that I'm not from Florence, so the information I have may not be
entirely accurate.
