**We are glad to announce that the Call for Proposals for EuroPython 2013 is open. It will run until March 5th, 23:59:59 CET, so don't waste time, hurry up!**

## Share your competence

During the Call for Proposals you can submit proposals for talks to be held at
the conference and, at the end of this period, the EuroPython community will
select, thanks to the **["Community voting"](https://ep2013.europython.eu
/talk-voting)** process, the best talks among all the proposals received.

There is some news: this year you can submit a proposal not only for a talk, a
hands-on training or a poster, but also for a **[Help Desk
session](https://ep2013.europython.eu/helpdesk)**, starting from now! The Help
Desk is a service run by EP attendees for EP attendees, a place where masters
of a technology give practical support on it, encouraging information exchange
and networking during the conference.

This year the agreement for **hotel accommodation** with Hotel Mediterraneo is
once again available and the number of rooms have been doubled, so you'll be
able to book your room directly on our website. You will find more information
and details about rates at the time of the registration launch.

Stay tuned, registration starts on **February 15th**, be sure to be among the
first to buy a ticket!

## Follow us

We broadcast our announcements on several different channels. Make sure you
don't miss anything about EuroPython: you can follow our @europython account
on **[Twitter](https://twitter.com/europython)**, be fan of our **[Facebook
page](http://www.facebook.com/europython)**, or subscribe to our **[RSS
feed](https://ep2013.europython.eu/blog/feeds/latest/)**, or to our low-
traffic **mailing-list**. Pick the channel that suits you best!

Happy Pythoning!

Hello everyone!

Apologies if everyone sees this announcement several times over the next few
days, but it is an important matter. My active involvement in EuroPython only
dates back to 2006, but if those who were there at the very beginning could
offer some assistance here, especially anyone involved in founding the
EuroPython conference and establishing the EuroPython Society, their input
would carry tremendous weight.

Hello everyone,

Some time ago, we asked for information about Python usage in Europe.
For anyone who works in a company that has an office in a EU Community
member state, we need your help.

There is a company in the UK that is trying to trademark the use of the
term "Python" for all software, services, servers... pretty much
anything having to do with a computer. Specifically, it is the company
that got a hold on the python.co.uk domain 13 years ago. At that time we
weren't looking a lot at trademark issues, and so we didn't get that domain.

This hasn't been an issue since then because the python.co.uk domain
has, for most of its life, just forwarded its traffic on to the parent
companies, veber.co.uk and pobox.co.uk. Unfortunately, Veber has decided
that they want to start using the name "Python" for their server products.

We contacted the owners of python.co.uk repeatedly and tried to discuss
the matter with them. They blew us off and responded by filing the
community trademark application claiming the exclusive right to use
"Python" for software, servers, and web services - everywhere in Europe\.

We got legal counsel in the UK and we (the PSF) are opposing the
community trademark application, but our own trademark application
hasn't yet matured. Accordingly, we are going with the trademark rights
we have developed through using "Python" consistently over the past 20
years.

According to our London counsel, some of the best pieces of evidence we
can submit to the European trademark office are official letters from
well-known companies "using PYTHON branded software in various member
states of the EU" so that we can "obtain independent witness statements
from them attesting to the trade origin significance of the PYTHON mark
in connection with the software and related goods/services." We also
need evidence of use throughout the EU.

What can you do?

1. Do you work for a company that uses Python? Are in the EU, do you
hire in the EU, or do you have an office in the EU? Could you write a
letter on company letterhead that we can forward to our EU counsel?

We would want:
     1) just a brief description of how Python is used at your company,
     2) how your company looks for and recognizes "Python" as only
coming from the PSF, and
     3) your view that another company using term Python to refer to
services, software, and servers would be confusing

This doesn't need to be long - just a couple of paragraphs, but we would
want any description of how you use Python for software, web hosting,
Internet servers, VPNs, design and development of computer hardware or
software, hosting websites, renting servers (like Openstack), or backup
services. For those who are interested the specific class descriptions
are at the bottom of this message. [1][2]

You can send a PDF copy of the letter to psf-trademarks at python.org

2. Do you have, or know of, anything that was published in the EU and
uses "Python" to refer to Python-the-language? Can we get copies,
pictures, or scans? This includes:

     - Books
     - Pamphlets
     - Conference programs or talks
     - Job listings
     - Magazines or other publications
     - Prospectuses

You can send a PDF scan of the materials to psf-trademarks at python.org

Please let me know - and if there are any questions that I can answer,
let me know. If you know someone who might have this information, please
feel free to forward this.

Thanks,

Van

The early bird catches the worm: exciting opportunities of saving money with
our Early Bird fares. Hurry up!

EuroPython [registrations](https://ep2013.europython.eu/registration/) are
open and Early Bird fares are available! This special fare provides up to a
30% discount compared with Regular rate and will be valid from February 15th
to April 12th.

We are offering grants (financial aids) to help people in need, in our [grant
page](https://ep2013.europython.eu/grants) you will find out how to apply.
Deadline for application is on April 12th.

## The price of the ticket includes:

- the **chance to vote** the talks -> by registering before the end of the voting process, you'll have the chance to vote the submitted abstracts and give your contribution to the final schedule of the conference.

- **lunch & coffee breaks** ->1 buffet lunches and 2 coffee breaks per day are offered during the conference, from 1st to 5th. Coding Sprints are not served by hotel catering.

- the **official T-shirt** of the conference (we have multiple sizes) and some more gadgets offered by our sponsors. Some sponsors could decided to give away some of their products, so we decided to have a lottery to give them to you.

## Hotel concession

As previously hinted, we are also offering a very [special
concession](https://ep2013.europython.eu/hotel-concession) for bedrooms with
Grand Hotel Mediterraneo, the conference hotel. We have 200 rooms and you'll
be able to book your room directly on our website. You can sleep with a low
budget in a 4-star hotel in the city center of Florence, with wifi and
breakfast included in the price!

Moreover, we will try to help people roomsharing: even if you don't know
anyone, you can simply book a single bed in a shared double, triple or
quadruple room, and we will find a good match for you. This will save you a
lot on the travel costs.

This concession is for a limited number of rooms, so we suggest to book as
early as possible.

## Call for proposals still running

Remember that the [call for proposals](https://ep2013.europython.eu/call-for-
proposals) is still open. Even if you have never given a talk in a conference,
consider submitting a proposal: you can mark yourself as first-time speaker in
the submission form, and we are preparing a great rehearsal and review process
to help such speakers improve their skills and talks.
