Message-ID: <20071007230931.GA25856@localdomain>

I am interested in finding / starting a Python SIG / UG in my home town
(Lexington, KY). I am curious about what the groups do at meetings, how
to attract members, and how to keep it all going. I am in the process
now of learning python myself. With that being said I don't think that I
would be a good person to lead the discussions so that is a concern of
mine for leading such a group. Any help / information that you can
provide would be greatly appreciated.

Nobody seems to be answering these requests, which is a shame
but underscores my first point: Just Do It! (it's really up
to the individual to get things going)

Please be sure to add your group here:

http://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups

And please considering posting to:

http://python-groups.blogspot.com/

A good way to advertise initially is to find local Linux users
groups and other similar groups, post to CLPA (*) and CLP (**),
and perhaps use Meetup (***).

(*) http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-announce-list
(**) http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list
(***) http://www.meetup.com/cities/bd/

Hope that's helpful, and good luck with your new group!

I looked on meetup.com but it looks like the nearest group is maybe
Nashville TN or Indianapolis IN. However you can sign up as interested
in a group there as a way to get started. In general meetup.com seems
to be a decent way to bootstrap a new group. You could also post to
http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list to see if you can
find people interested in starting group.

Without a leader it's not going to happen, but being the leader doesn't
mean you do the speaking or presentations. It's just your job to
organize, find venues, find presenters, etc.

The best way to find out what to discuss is ultimately to ask the members
what they're interested in. Usually, having someone present something
brings in a lot more people than just meeting informally. A good start is
to look around for any prominent Pythoneers that might be living near
enough to your town to come and do a talk.

Also, hands-on demos or tours of some library or technique are great if
people bring laptops.

BTW, browsing around on http://python.meetup.com/about/ and
http://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups is a way to see
what other groups are doing as far as topics and format. You
may be able to find some fairly reusable content/ideas that way.

Hope this helps.

Anyone have a clever way of getting notes aggregated automatically via
RSS from an existing blogger account? It seems like this would be an
easier way than double posting for each meeting, as many groups
already have an existing website.

Presumably the mechanism behind planet.python.org would work to aggregate
different group feeds. I don't know much about it, though. Would be
a nice service for the Python community if someone wants to work on it.

It seems like either Plone and/or blogger is enough of a starter kit
for any group to getting running immediately without locking
themselves into the meetup.com system. Getting a way to use these
tools together and, aggregating their feeds, is something we will be
discussing at the Thursday Atlanta Python User Group meeting.

Anyone else that is interested please contact me. We have also been
going back and forth on getting a speaker registration system setup,
so that Python groups can get speakers from other cities. This really
isn't a huge problem to tackle, but it needs some organization, which
is why I am starting the discussion.

I think because we keep answering the same question over and over and
the answer is in the list archives.

Which means a user group FAQ of some sort is needed for at least this
most commonly asked question.
