Hi guys,
as you can see from the email below, we just launched a ML for
pythoneers based in the North West of England, capitalizing on a
fantastic PyconUK event hold by our friends in the West Midlands. The
response has been good so far (12 members n 24 hours).

I've read all the advice posted on this list and I'll try to follow it
in the next few months. I added it to the wiki page and (sensibly)
spammed the local python and linux lists, do you think I should also
send it to the newsgroups?

Is there anything else that needs to be done to "make it official"?

I was also thinking about opening a facebook group, which would only
be used to point people to the real list. (The Facebook guys should
really find a way of integrating mailing lists in their group, but
anyway.) Does anyone know any other online community which we should
make aware?

Best Regards,
Giacomo Lacava

Subject: Announcing the Python North West mailing list

On the wave of the great time we had at Pycon, it was decided we
should have a proper mailing list dedicated to North-West-based Python
users... so here it comes!

The list is open to everyone in the area who loves
coding/playing/enjoying Python. To join, you don't need to know your
django from your pylons or your pyqt from your wxwindows... and
certainly you don't need to pronounce WSGI. Don't worry, it's going to
be uber-informal and very low-traffic, and I promise we won't use
lolcats (not much anyway).

The group homepage, from where you can subscribe, is:
and the email address to use for posting:
>> python-north-west at googlegroups.com
(ideas on how to link this to other social software (facebook etc) are welcome)

Best regards, and happy coding!

Hello,

My name is David Meyer, and I am new to this list. I'm interested in
starting a Python UG in Tampa, FL. and hope I can get some good
resources (ideas) on how to do this right. Any advice anyone wants to
pass on would be most welcome!

Thanks,

David Meyer

Hi, welcome to the list! There is apparently already a Python Meetup
going in Tampa FL:

http://python.meetup.com/178/

That's probably the place to start. You can also try to find local
Linux or other related user groups and announce the Tampa Python
group there, to try to build it up to a larger group. Booking
interesting and/or well known speakers also helps, if advertised
well.

You should also add the group here:

http://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups

And contributing to the user group blog is also helpful:

http://python-groups.blogspot.com/

Hope that helps... good luck with it!

I think it's reasonable to announce new users groups on CLPA and CLP.
Some groups even announce their meetings on CLPA.

Don't think so. Please consider posting to the blog tho!

If you're on linkedin.com maybe list it there somewhere, but
I've no idea how effective that is -- maybe worth a try tho.

I just got this and thought it might be worth repeating here... maybe
it should go on a wiki?

Subject: [pyconuk] UK Python User Groups
To: Mailing list for the PyCon UK conference <pyconuk at python.org>

Hello UK Pythonistas,

With a few new local Python user groups getting off the ground, it's
worth reminding ourselves that o'Reilly offer good support to groups
who register with them.

Full details are at ug.oreilly.com. You have to register your group
(not too onerous) and in return you can get

* review copies of o'Reilly books
* discounts on o'Reilly products, a nice benefit for members
* donations of books, like we were given for the draw at PyCon UK

and, no doubt, a few other things, like I think it's possible to get
o'Reilly authors to speak at meetings.

Tim Williams registered the Birmingham LUG, but I don't think we've
got around to registering PyWm yet, so we're no example.

Josette reminded me that we have not registered PyCon UK, but on the
whole I think we'll have enough to do trying to run the conference.

Best wishes,

John
