Message-ID: <63940b01002121359o6386f60bqd34811b701cf6cf5@mail.gmail.com>

I always enjoy the hour-long open spaces that pop up around user
groups at PyCon. However, I happen to know that there's much more
knowledge to be shared than can possibly be covered in an hour. I've
been to two successful all-day community leadership unconferences -
covering topics like setting up video, turning community members into
leaders, budgets for conferences, getting sponsorships and speakers,
etc.

So: anybody interested in having an evening session on user groups?
Alternatively, anybody interested in dinner and/or drinks instead?

I'd be interested in whatever coalesces.

Hello all,

I am interested in an evening session as well as dinner/drinks.

In terms of introductions, my name is Mike Coyle. I've been organizing the
Philadelphia Python User Group (PhillyPUG) since November 2009.
I am also the co-founder of a Python-centric software and consulting company
started in 2005. This is the first PyCon that I've been able to attend
since 2005, and I'm looking forward to meeting you next week.

Thanks,
  Mike

I have just started up the Birmingham, AL Users group and would love
the chance to sit down with other group organizers to chat. I'm
definitely in. A session and/or drinks is fine.

I'm glad to see so much interest! I've created a wiki page where we
can keep track of topics that people are interested in talking about
and which day works for the most people, in case folks have plans on
either Friday or Saturday. I'll make this work either way.

At this point I'm thinking doing things at the hotel will just
simplify a large amount of the organizing burden, so we'll stick with
that for now.

OK, so here is the link: if you're planning on attending, please add
your name to the list and add a topic that you want to see (or add a
+1 to one that you're excited about):

http://us.pycon.org/2010/openspace/UserGroupEveningSession/

Happy valentines day, folks, and see you later this week!

be putting this on the board.

Hello everyone,
it was a pleasure meeting with other group organizers today at the
open space in Atlanta. I'm sorry I did not get to join you guys at
the pub but hopefully this mailing list will give us the opportunity
to have a helpful conversation. As many of you have requested, I'm
going to make a write-up on how we got things started at
Montr?al-Python Hopefully that will help some of you to bootstrap your
group but at you know, I'm on a tight schedule while PyCon is going on
so this will have to wait for a few days.

Best regards,

Hi all,
I haven't put up any open spaces to continue the discussion of user
group organizers. I'd like to talk about Conferences but there isn't
really any time that works for me before the end of the conference
(saturday evening is completely packed).

I propose that instead of having an open space, we add to the wiki
pages on python.org. As it turns out, Andrew Kuchling has written a
resource about this already!

http://wiki.python.org/moin/AdvocacyWritingTasks/RunningAConference

Here is a more general page of advice.

http://wiki.python.org/moin/StartingYourUsersGroup

I'm happy to talk with anyone about this subject if they like while
we're here - just find me or email me - just not sure that I'm ready
to run a second open space.

Cheers,
David

Hey Mike,
I took the beginnings of some notes at: http://www.pyconpads.net/usergroupbof

It does list the attendees, however, it really needs more detail.

I'd like to encourage people instead of working on that doc adding
information to the wiki at the links, or starting a conversation here.

Cheers,
David
