well, the invitation arrived about 30 seconds before the "welcome
to the list" message.  fyi, yahoo invitations contain a URL which
automagically subscribes the to-address to the list:

    JOIN NOW, IT'S EASY: 

    ...

    2) Go to the Yahoo! Groups site at
        http://groups.yahoo.com/invite/locales?
        email=i18n-sig%40python%Eorg&iref=qtiPP_QJZis2GmOyXijIgT4GKsY

    ...

obviously, someone on the i18n list thought he'd gotten a personal
invitation, and clicked on that link...
