[Image-SIG] Q: resizing (smaller) with anti-aliasing

Just a quick question:

Is there a way to scale an image (smaller) that includes some
form of antialiasing?

My thumbnails are coming out a little chunky, partucularly when
the original is a line-drawing or diagram.  If I reduce them
with gimp they come out a lot smoother.
