The easiest way is to download one of the pre-built PIL packages from:
   http://pythonmac.org/packages/
If you are using the currently recommended Python 2.5 installation,  
you want:
   http://pythonmac.org/packages/py25-fat/dmg/PIL-1.1.5-py2.5- 
macosx10.4.dmg
