do you know OpenCV? It has a fairly useable Python wrapper and is one  
of the most complete image processing libraries in the open source  
world. Also, it's one of the fastest ...


Integration with PIL and numpy makes it a strong rival for Matlab -  
but with PyMat you could even combine the strength of both ...
