[Image-SIG] Using GIMP filters within a Python script

Hi,

Is there a way to access the filters available in GIMP to process images
within Python?
I see that there is a way to write Python-based plugins for GIMP, but I
would like to call GIMP filters from Python.
Maybe this is a naive question.
I also see that there is an ImageFilter class in PIL, but GIMP has so many
filters already written that I wondered whether I could use GIMP's filters
right away.
