I would like to thank everyone for their help - you all are amazing!

It was a problem with not opening a file in binary mode - which as  
soon as I read that I smacked my head very hard and had a Homer moment.

I apologize for not including sys.version and platform.platform()  
information when I posted errors; however, I was running python -v for  
each of the tests I was running.

Everything is working perfectly and I hope I will get to help someone  
as you have helped me. Thank you very much for your time and knowledge.
