We should clear the expenses in about a weeks time.

Just a small nitpick. The formatting shows the currency as $'s when it
is actually in Rs. You can do that by clicking on '123'-> More
currencies -> Rs.

this is preliminary collection of information we did not want to clutter
up the main mailing list. However, those of you with connections to
Chennai are welcome to join chennaipy and contribute to the discussions.
Once a few proposals are put up we will come to this list for a debate

I'm familiar with Anna University and IIT -- fairly densely populated
and within city limits but not so much with the shortlisted ones
above. Could someone familiar with Chennai comment on how safe it
would be for women to travel to-and-fro from these venues. Frankly, my
travel experiences in Chennai have been anything but pleasant and
arguments with errant auto-drivers makes me apprehensive, much more
about safety than anything else.

I'm aware that transportation could be shared but that would mean one
or the other folks waiting if one wants to attend the last session for
the day and if one decides to make different plans it ends up
inconveniencing the other person(s) even more. Those are some
important points to be considered when deciding the venue.

I'd vote for Anna Univ, or IIT too.  Location, location, location.
But I wasn't at the ChennaiPy meet (I was in Anna Univ and forgot
about it!), so I'd like to know why they discounted those as venues.
Some students from IIT were interested, and had got preliminary
approval from some professors ... not sure if they were at the meet,
or on this list.  Anyways, lets discuss it here.

About the safety thing, Chennai is said to be a very safe city, but if
you feel there might concerns about that, then I'm sure arrangements
can be made to transport delegates around.

there are three rules regarding autos in chennai:

1. if you do not know tamil - do not use autos in chennai
2. if you do not know tamil - do not use autos in chennai
3. if you do not know tamil - do not use autos in chennai

use call taxis with meters - they are cheaper than autos. If coming from
the airport or railway station, there are prepaid taxis. For both
airport and railway station the suburban electric train station is
within walking distance. That has ladies compartments and is safe. And
cheap.

I feel Chennai is much better off than before. Its definitely a city
improving, comapred to Bangalore at least. Yes autos are a pain.
Please use the thumbrules we used in Bangalore.
ie
1) places that come free
2) Has good student/staff support
3) is accessible and with lesser traffic pain points.
4) which is nearer to places where we can find accomodation.

hmm...Despite speaking in Tamil creepy behavior abounds, so nothing to
do with language or Tamil per se.  Everything to do with individual
attitudes.

Public transport is usually the safest bet and while its true that the
trains and buses (i've travelled by both in Chennai) are better modes
of transport, are the train stations and bus routes well connected and
easily accessible to the colleges shortlisted, viz. Rajalakshmi
Engineering College, Jaya Engineering College and SRM City / Main
campus? Do these three colleges have good hotels nearby or accessible
B&B type accommodation within a 2-3km range? Please do consider that
before deciding the final venue.

Long commutes would impact city residents too, so rejecting centrally
located institutes (because they are government-run?) seems odd. If
this list does not have any volunteers from IIT/Anna/MIT it would be
nicer if the locals pinged them offlist to get their feedback.

as far as I know (my daughter has been using autos in Chennai for 4-5
years now) auto drivers are treat both men and women the same - their
only interest is to gouge money.

that is what we are investigating now - as for Rajalakshmi and Jaya,
they have a fleet of buses each which they will probably put at our
disposal. And given the excellent train system in Chennai this is not a
big issue.

government institutions are a huge pain to work with. And without local
volunteers, it is very difficult to conduct an event. As for IIT, it
could be a good bet - if we have local volunteers. Otherwise it will be
difficult - I know last year in IISc, there was no local input - even
the flies and mosquitoes had a superiority complex and ignored us.

Recently I conducted a Python workshop at Rajalakshmi Engineering College [1]
It was a good experience.  So, I am +1 for that college.
