I think in this time and age this is becoming really essential. Next year, we should take a small step towards making the conference accessible. Unclear how at this point in time but its a good step to take I feel. Thanks for sharing. Message-ID: Ladies & Gentlemen, Boys & Girls, On the 1st of November 2014, the volunteers meet in order to plan for PyCon 2015 was held at the HackerEarth Office in Koramangala. 6 of us were there at the meeting and another 6 joined us through Google Hangouts. Here is a list of what all were discussed and decided: 1. "For 2015, we would like to see..." a) Hackfest / Dev sprint - Get started by user groups in various places organizing sprints locally. - Needs to have planning. - Chandan, Sayan & Bibhas along with Tenzin, to take the lead in planning. 2. PyCon India 2015, Website. a) Learn from PyCon US and EuroPython websites. - They use something called Symposion. - Sheesh, Siva, Krace, Vanitha & Bibhas to lead the effort. b) Get more volunteers to keep testing the website iterations. c) Logo design. - Praseetha & Bibhas to lead the effort. - Get more designers involved. - Sayan to talk to his juniors. d) To be launched on January 1st, 2015. 3. Opening CFP & Talk selection. a) Dates: - CFP opens on January 20th, 2015. - CFP closes on May 31st, 2015. - Month of June will be for talk selections. - Month of July will be for speakers to prepare and upload content. - Month of August will be for preparing the schedule. - Final Schedule to be prepared by September 1st. b) Proposal submission & selection. - Talk selection committee to have 11 members. - Slide deck should be submitted when the talk is proposed. - Talk selection committee should prepare guidelines for Slide Deck creation. - Rejection emails to be crafted and to be sent out for rejected proposals. - IMPORTANT: Talk selection committee should be proactive in providing feedback to speakers. - Have volunteers who will follow up with talk selection committee members & keep them on their toes. - Talk selection committee to be finalized by December 1st week. - Open a mail thread asking for experienced practitioners who can be on the talk selection committee. - Step 1 in talk selection process will be to judge by content. c) Outreach for getting a wide variety of topics. - Actively get in touch with communities who work in different areas like OpenStack, SciPy, etc. - Have more sections in talk proposal form. - Use Mailchimp to create specific mail notification groups that people can selectively subscribe to. - Notify previous speakers. - Have a form/site/something, where potential sponsors can register themselves so that we can reach out to them. - Krace to handle the outreach effort. 4. Mobile App. a) Should have schedule and some feedback mechanism. b) Feedback. - Requires a lot more thought. - Open up a thread on mailing list for discussion. 5. Financial stuff. a) Get more companies to sponsor. - Understand what is stopping a company from sponsoring PyCon India. - Understand what the expectation of smaller companies are. - Get more volunteers to be point of contacts and to reach out to sponsors. - Prepare a proper prospectus with details and points. - Rejy had previously expressed interest in being involved. 6. Open spaces. - IMPORTANT: Open spaces should be given more visibility. - Separate open spaces & sponsor tracks from each other? - Thought: Might be good to let only the Platinum Sponsors have dedicated sessions. - Thought: The other sponsors are free to use open spaces / lightning talk sessions. - Apparently there was a miscommunication between the open space organizers and the other conference organizers in terms of ground work needed to be done and other related things. This needs to be rectified. - Have the planning done at least one month before hand. - Display Open spaces in the conference schedule on the website. That's about it. Most of the volunteer meets will have provision to attend remotely. Just look out for that, or request for one when not provided. - rejy (rmc) > On Sat, Nov 1, 2014 at 12:52 PM, Fasih Ahmad Fakhri > > wrote: > > Great, I will be there from hangout. > > Thanks > > Fasih Ahmad Fakhri > > > On 01-Nov-2014 12:45 pm, "vijay kumar" > wrote: > > Hangout link[1] > > [1] https://plus.google.com/hangouts/_/gyssqq5ic6pnkxpbekncad26qma > > On Sat, Nov 1, 2014 at 12:34 PM, Rajesh Mathew > > wrote: > > I won't be able to make it today. > > Regards, > Rajesh M > > On Sat, Nov 1, 2014 at 11:13 AM, siva kumar > > wrote: > > my apologies :-(. I have been actively volunteering for PyCon India from past 3 years and I see the female python developers participation getting reduced year by year. This was one of the concern PSSI had discussed during the AGM. PSSI has come up with the initiative, diversity, where we all female developers can share and discuss to see how we can improve the active participation from female developers. If we have any concerns/expectations, PSSI can help us the way they can. We have the mailing list ( http://lists.pssi.org.in/mailman/listinfo/diversity) created. This mailing list only for female pythonistas and the archives are not public so the discussions are kept private. I would request all female developers to join in the mailing list and share your thoughts. Please spread the word. That would imply that the presence of male developers is the factor that currently keeps away female developers, and that male developers cannot play a role in encouraging more female developers to come to the mainstream. I do understand the need for a separate list to stay focussed on the objective, but discriminating against gender on that list may be counter productive to the objective, in my opinion. - rejy (rmc) > I would request all female developers to join in the mailing list and > share your thoughts. > Please spread the word. > > > Thanks, > Vanitha > > > > _______________________________________________ > Inpycon mailing list > Inpycon at python.org > https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/inpycon > From noufal at nibrahim.net.in Tue Nov 18 18:12:39 2014 From: noufal at nibrahim.net.in (Noufal Ibrahim KV) Date: Tue, 18 Nov 2014 22:42:39 +0530 Subject: [Inpycon] [X-Post] Diversity In-Reply-To: (Vanitha Shanmugam's message of "Tue, 18 Nov 2014 20:28:04 +0530") References: Message-ID: <87fvdg5t6g.fsf@nibrahim.net.in> On Tue, Nov 18 2014, Vanitha Shanmugam wrote: [...] > We have the mailing list ( > http://lists.pssi.org.in/mailman/listinfo/diversity) created. [...] There is a Python diversity list at https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/diversity which you might want to send your email to. There are folks from there from India and other countries who are interested and will probably be able to contribute. -- Cordially, Noufal http://nibrahim.net.in From me at bibhas.in Tue Nov 18 18:28:33 2014 From: me at bibhas.in (Bibhas) Date: Tue, 18 Nov 2014 22:58:33 +0530 Subject: [Inpycon] [BangPypers] [X-Post] Diversity In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <546B81C1.9090901@bibhas.in> Hi Venitha, On 11/18/2014 08:28 PM, Vanitha Shanmugam wrote: > Hi, > > This is regarding diversity group organized by PSSI. > > I have been actively volunteering for PyCon India from past 3 years and I > see the female python developers participation getting reduced year by > year. From what I've seen in last 4 years, I'd say this was very much necessary. This is a new movement for a lot of the people in our community. So to anyone who's thinking that they don't get it or this is separating the community and hence is bad, I'd like you to read this blog post[1] by Hynek Schlawack and the section with the heading "Why Women Only?" here[2]. Maybe it'll help.
