We should be more worried about our costs rather than others'. If we can
subsidies the ticket or have a decent economy at a lower price, it's no
point to hike the price based on the fact that others are charging more.
Last year, when sree visited Delhi, the price was set up using excel which
had speculative sponsorships and other budgets. We then took a reasonable
estimate of the number of attendees and then took the call of the price to
cover the shortfall.
With this logic 3 days conference for 3,000 look perfectly fine.

Well, I see that cost of the venue (BIEC) is comparable to what we got from
Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi when we were planning for PyCon - 2016. The
venue was very lucrative. It was large enough to accommodate people in a
single auditorium for the keynote ( We were able to do it this time around
thanks to a better planned auditorium).
But the primary reason for dropping Siri Fort auditorium was the cost. I
particularly don't remember the other points, but during the discussions,
the cost of Siri Fort Auditorium was proving to be detrimental for the
affordability of the conference. We went with a cheaper venue ( JNU ) that
gave us room for spending on other stuff but that definitely created some
logistic havoc.
For this year's pycon, small issues were still there, but by and large,
most of the nightmare issues from last year were addressed in a cost
effective manner. I feel that this venue will put us in a situation similar
to what we were having while initiating booking for Siri Fort during PyCon
2016. We are putting a lot of money on the venue based on speculative
sponsorships for which as of now we have no concrete commitments.
Also, adding to the issue is the higher price and weekdays which might
decrease the participation, especially from students who add a major chunk
to the demographics at all our conferences. Do we see the economy coming
our way.
