Hans,

I understood your concern and suggestion. I did not yet dive  into the 
implementation of the solution but it seems that the difficulty of my 
proposition and your improvement is equivalent. When I'll start I'll try 
to do both.

I'm a windows user and can do test with the readline implementation for 
windows and the one of cygwin.

I'll be glad if you could test my patches for the Linux platform.
