Ahh this is working perfectly.  Many thanks. I wonder if the silent
mode in the original implementation was a design choice or a
convenience.  If the latter,  maybe you want the echo on by default
with a -q (quiet) or -s (silent) to silence it.  I certainly defer to
Robert's preference, but I'll normally be using this in echo mode,
