This shouldnt happen: HTTP HEAD method is not HTTP GET. Its supposed to only return headers, not to trigger an action on web server. I have anti-malware software that checks every HTTP link in received emails. When such a link is found by antimalware, it does a HTTP HEAD request on the URL to check the mimetype (if mimetype show a windows executable, an alert is sent). But this HEAD request in understood by mailman as a *real* unsubscribe request, so mailman sends a confirmation to the actual user (who is lost). (Strictly speaking, the behaviour is wrong even with a HTTP GET request: GET should not trigger a webserver action too...) ** Affects: mailman Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mailman Coders, which is subscribed to GNU Mailman. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1372199 Title: in emails, unsubscribe links should not react to HTTP HEAD requests To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/1372199/+subscriptions From mark at msapiro.net Mon Sep 22 02:12:53 2014 From: mark at msapiro.net (Mark Sapiro) Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2014 00:12:53 -0000 Subject: [Bug 1372199] Re: in emails, unsubscribe links should not react to HTTP HEAD requests References: <20140921230220.24721.34686.malonedeb@soybean.canonical.com> Message-ID: <20140922001254.17678.7530.malone@chaenomeles.canonical.com> There are a few issues here. First, the unsubscribe URL in your example is not sent in the standard welcome message. The standard message contains only something like If you ever want to unsubscribe or change your options (eg, switch to or from digest mode, change your password, etc.), visit your subscription page at: http://example.com/mailman/options/user%40example.net without the login-unsub fragment. Your installation has modified the subscribeack.txt template on a per-list, per-domain or sitewide basis to add the login-unsub fragment. That notwithstanding, your point about a HEAD request on the URL is valid and I will fix this, but I will still allow GET. In theory this really should be only a POST from the options login page, but it is well known and widely used to put such URLs in list message headers or footers as unsubscribe links, so disallowing GET would be too disruptive. ** Changed in: mailman Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: mailman Status: New => In Progress ** Changed in: mailman Milestone: None => 2.1.19 ** Changed in: mailman Assignee: (unassigned) => Mark Sapiro (msapiro) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mailman Coders, which is subscribed to GNU Mailman. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1372199 Title: in emails, unsubscribe links should not react to HTTP HEAD requests To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/1372199/+subscriptions From stephane.martin at vesperal.eu Mon Sep 22 02:22:57 2014 From: stephane.martin at vesperal.eu (Stephane Martin) Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2014 00:22:57 -0000 Subject: [Bug 1372199] Re: in emails, unsubscribe links should not react to HTTP HEAD requests References: <20140921230220.24721.34686.malonedeb@soybean.canonical.com> Message-ID: <20140922002257.18130.67721.malone@chaenomeles.canonical.com> good enough for me, thank you! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mailman Coders, which is subscribed to GNU Mailman. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1372199 Title: in emails, unsubscribe links should not react to HTTP HEAD requests To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/1372199/+subscriptions From 1372199 at bugs.launchpad.net Mon Sep 22 04:13:39 2014 From: 1372199 at bugs.launchpad.net (Launchpad Bug Tracker) Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2014 02:13:39 -0000 Subject: [Bug 1372199] Re: in emails, unsubscribe links should not react to HTTP HEAD requests References: <20140921230220.24721.34686.malonedeb@soybean.canonical.com> Message-ID: <20140922021341.4920.8378.launchpad@ackee.canonical.com> ** Branch linked: lp:mailman/2.1 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mailman Coders, which is subscribed to GNU Mailman. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1372199 Title: in emails, unsubscribe links should not react to HTTP HEAD requests To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/1372199/+subscriptions From mark at msapiro.net Mon Sep 22 04:15:48 2014 From: mark at msapiro.net (Mark Sapiro) Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2014 02:15:48 -0000 Subject: [Bug 1372199] Re: in emails, unsubscribe links should not react to HTTP HEAD requests References: <20140921230220.24721.34686.malonedeb@soybean.canonical.com> Message-ID: <20140922021549.18315.37769.launchpad@chaenomeles.canonical.com> ** Changed in: mailman Status: In Progress => Fix Committed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mailman Coders, which is subscribed to GNU Mailman. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1372199 Title: in emails, unsubscribe links should not react to HTTP HEAD requests To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/1372199/+subscriptions From njacknis at optonline.net Mon Sep 22 23:59:58 2014 From: njacknis at optonline.net (Norman Jacknis) Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2014 21:59:58 -0000 Subject: [Bug 266278] Re: Problem creating list via web References: <20080905193028.27052.83222.launchpad@forster.canonical.com> Message-ID: <20140922215958.508.86256.malone@gac.canonical.com> I had the same bug -- and it also appears as Bug #266110 (sf1002486), Bug #266113 (sf1006797) and Bug #265938 (sf769484) from years ago and still hasn't been fixed. You only need to authenticate for private archive access with your own list member address and list member password. If you get this mbox, you'll see that the real From separators do not have obfuscated email addresses (which makes cleanarch think they are not real From separators). You will also see that the messages have all (or at least most of) the original headers, not just the abbreviated set in the .txt files. It is not possible for me to be of further help with this question as I have no information about the modications that OpenStack has made to its Mailman installation. Aside from the obvious web style changes, there is at least one anomaly, i.e. the file at is a gzip archive containing a file named 2014-September.txt, but this is not a text file. It is another gzip archive which contains the actual text file. This is due to some modification and/or misconfiguration of Mailman. I have no idea what other things might be in play here that result in the "From " line in the message body not being escaped, but I don't think this will happen with an unmodified Mailman. I think you'll need to follow up with OpenStack to find why their Mailman installation is broken in this way. If they need assistance, they can join the mailman-users at python.org list at and post their request to that list. Note that this is a publicly archived list.
