[Mailman-Developers] Checking if a varible is set inside the MailList class

I'm trying to figure out if a varibe is already set inside the mailman class 
and if not, set it.

The cleanest thing I've come up with is 
self.var_name = getattr(self, var_name, default).

Is there a more elegent solution?
