Alex, you really do *not* want to do it this way.  The directory
layout for the archive dirs is very specifically set up so you can
easily switch between public and private archives.  Doing the above
will probably break this.

David Rocher's followup provided the correct recipe.  I've added a
little note to the INSTALL file about consulting FollowSymLinks for
Apache users.
